Swazi Tribal Weapons and Historic Photographs

Gordon Malangabi Crawford is the author of Sicebile - Swaziland’s Cultural Adornment and Artefacts. What is the meaning of Sicebile? The siSwati word for 'treasure' is 'Imicebo'. From that root comes 'Sicebile', meaning 'we have treasures', 'we are rich' and 'we are blessed'. In usage it usually refers to one's family."

Swazi Beadwork

Ninety six pages of text and 219 pictures celebrate Swazi beadwork, combs, dolls, figures, headdresses, headrests, horn artifacts,  meat platters, milk pails, mirrors, pipes, ritual objects, snuff bottles and all sorts of weapons such as axes, clubs, knobkerries, shields and spears.

Swazi Doll - Swazi Fertility Doll

Sicebile is the first book to detail Swazi material culture and tribal dress. The Swazi are descendents of pastoralist Nguni tribes and to a lesser degree, Sotho-Tswana. For the most part, they speak siSwati and are renowned in the region for their rich tradition of tribal arts. The book provides a window into that little known and rapidly disappearing art.

Gordon Crawford was born in Zimbabwe in 1954 and learned to speak Chilapalapa at the same time as he learned English. This helped him later in life when he learned siSwati. Gordon developed a passion for tribal artefacts and gained a lifelong interest in the fascinating culture of Swaziland’s native people. His book is his unique account of the rich cultural life of the Swazi Kingdom.

Swazi Headdresses

In dedication Gordon writes:  "I see myself as a messenger passing on knowledge from the elderly Swazi folk to those who are younger, along with the advise to be proud of our Swazi heritage. Bearing that in mind, I wish to thank and dedicate this book to those who supported me and made this book possible - the people of the Kingdom of Swaziland."
